 Solar Cookers for Haiti

Thank you to each of the supporters around our state for this person to person initiative. The bus left Albuquerque FULLY LOADED with much needed medical supplies, solar cookers, donated food, and much more. Board President Eric Doerrer and Talal Saint-Lot are driving. Eric will fly back to Abq and Talal will stay with the bus as our "guard". We heard that we have a "GO" through customs and we are sure the bus will be there in time to meet the Teacher for Spring Break Distribution. We will keep you posted of the journey. In May of 2009, Rebuild New Mexico Board Members made an exception to the bi-laws to allow for one international project using the technical skills and networking resources to see if we could make a difference in one global community in the world. We selected Cabaret in Haiti. We set the intention to purchase solar cookers and provide them to the community along with training and other permaculture techniques while we were there. As fate would have it, middle school students from the APS District Tonny Hillerman School were forming in an afterschool program under the direction of Teacher Chelsea Henrie. Her mission was to build with her students something that could help an impoverished community. The two intentions met and since September of 2009, 28 students were building solar cookers that can cook food and sterilize water. Teacher Ms. Henrie and her Administrator were due to take the solar cookers along with partners and Board Members of Rebuild New Mexico that the kids built to present to the Mayor of Cabaret during APS Spring Break in March.
